Deepa, niece of deceased former Tamil Nadu chief-minister J. Jayalalithaa, has asserted that she hasn’t quit the poll fray and that she is very much in contention to contest the upcoming R.K. Nagar by-polls to be held in the city on 12th April.
After Jayalalithaa’s demise in December last year under mysterious circumstances, Tamil Nadu politics has been undergoing huge upheavals. Ruling AIADMK has split into two under jailbird Sasikala, the former aide of Jayalalithaa (who didn’t take proper care of her ‘boss’ and is suspected of plotting Puratchithalaivi’s early demise) and former chief-minister O. Panneerselvam.
As if two factions of AIADMK are not enough, Deepa announced on 24th February the launch of her ‘MGR-Amma-Deepa Peravai’ (MADP). Daughter of Jayalalithaa’s elder brother, Deepa (whe reportedly embraced Christianity a few years back) and her husband Madhavan developed serious differences recently and Madhavan even announced that she wasn’t supporting his wife’s political venture.
In the meantime, Deepa told newsmen in the city that she hadn’t quit the poll fray and accused of the powers-that-be of planting rumours about her in social media. “A huge conspiracy is at work to prevent me from contesting from R.K. Nagar; I would, however, contest the by-polls and I’m sure people would rally behind me,” she said and also conceded that she was shocked by her husband’s opposition to her efforts.
