In the sixties and seventies, films starring the then top heroes MGR and Sivaji Ganesan used to release on the same day; invariably, MGR’s films would always have the upper hand at the box-office. Later, the competition shifted to Rajini and Kamal in the eighties and nineties and then to Ajith and Vijay.
Besides, audiences and fans are not amused by big films releasing on the same day as invariably, only one of those films go on to become successful while the other films don’t do a rollicking business if released on the same day. In order to avoid this, Kollywood filmmakers of late been showing increasing tendency to leave gap of a week or two or more in between the theatrical releases of ‘big films’ starring frontline heroes.
Getting theatres has also been becoming increasingly tougher. Vijay’s Mersal and Ajith Kumar’s Vivegam were the major films which released this year. Next year – 2018 – might have the release of films starring Rajini, Kamal Haasan, Vijay, Ajith Kumar, Suriya, Vijay Sethupathi and all other frontline heroes, which would be a bonanza for fans of these stars as well as movie-goers.
Rajini’s Pa. Ranjith-directed Kaala Engira Karikaalan and Shankar-directed 2.0 might be releasing in the first-half of next year, making it a rarity in the past two
decades that two of Rajini’s films are releasing in the same year. Kaml’s Vishwaroopam 2 and Sabaash Naidu may also see the light of day in 2018.
Suriya’ Thaana Serndha Koottam, Vikram’s Sketch, Ajith’s Viswasam, Vijay’s untitled A.R. Murugadoss-directed film, Dhanush’s Enai Nokki Paayum Thotta and Vada Chennai, Simbu’s Mani Ratnam-directed film, ‘Jayam’ Ravi’s Tik Tik Tik and Adanga Maru, Vijay Sethupathi’s Oru Nalla Naal Parthu Solraen, Super-Deluxe and Junga, Arya’s Gajinikanth, Prabhu Deva’s Kulebakavali, Yung Mung Chung, Mercury & Charlie Chaplin 2, Atharvaa’s Imaikkaa Nodigal, Vishal’s Irumbu Thirai and Sandakozhi 2, Karthi’s Pandiraj-directed untitled venture, etc, are some major films slated to release in the ensuing year.
