According to director Peyton Reed, Michelle Pfeiffer’s Janet Van Dyne will play a pivotal role in Ant-Man and the Wasp. He stressed the character’s importance in the sequel, following her brief appearance in 2015’s Ant-Man.

“She’s a very important character. It’s fair to say if someone were to have spent thirty-something years in the Quantum Realm and survived, it would have an effect,” Reed said.

Janet was seen in her superhero role as the Wasp during a quick flashback in Ant-Man as Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) explained why he hung up the mantle to Scott Lang (Paul Rudd). On a mission to disable a Soviet nuclear missile, she disappeared into the subatomic quantum realm, which Lang coincidentally came back from at the movie’s climax. This will be a major plot driver in the sequel, as it has inspired Hank and his daughter Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) to explore the microverse to try to rescue Janet.
