A look at the 200-odd films released in Kollywood in the year 2017 would reveal the fact that besides commercial films, many off-beat films have also tasted equal (if not more) success as audiences continued to promote ‘parallel cinema’.Though films starring frontline heroes turn out to be commercially successful, they are hardly counted among ‘good’ (or) ‘meaningful’ films. Films of the parallel cinema genre, which are often made to struggle to find even decent theatres for their release, are usually the ones which speak Kollywood’s glory. Though these films are recognized after their release in theatres, the hard path leading to their theatrical release is often not spoken about.
Nithilan’s Kurangu Bommai, Sri Ganesh’s 8 Thottakkal, Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Maanagaram and Gopi Nainar’s Arram tasted success at the box-office and so did Arun Prabhu’s year-end venture Aruvi. All the films were critically acclaimed besides ending up as commercially successful ventures. Incidentally enough, the directors of these films were all debutants!
Karthi’s Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru and Nayantara’s Arram succeeded in theatres almost at the same time though both were films of very different genres. Nayantara once again established her stardom and the power to carry a film on her shoulders. Her portrayal of District Collector Madhivadhani in Arram came in for appreciation from critics as well as movie-goers.
Let’s hope the trend continues in 2018 too!
